Atypical Myopathy

As the weather cools and autumn approaches, horses grazing on pasture with sycamore seeds or seedlings are at risk of atypical myopathy – a potentially fatal muscle disease. Signs to watch for:

  • Stiffness or reluctance to move
  • Muscle tremors or weakness
  • Difficulty breathing or sweating excessively
  • Dark-colored urine

There is no antidote and sadly even with prompt veterinary attention there is a high mortality rate.

Acorn Poisoning

Autumn brings beautiful fallen leaves and acorns, but did you know these can be toxic to pets and horses?

Watch out for:

  • Loss of appetite, dehydration
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Abdominal pain or colic in horses
  • Diarrhoea

There is no antidote and it can cause severe gastrointestinal and kidney damage. Prompt veterinary attention is vital if acorn poisoning is suspected.
