| Pets Corner February 2012 | The mild winter so far makes you feel spring is not far away. Th e changing day length stimulates entire female cats to come into season. So now is the time to have young female cats neutered or spayed and any young tom cats castrated to prevent unwnted pregnancies. The rescue catteries continue to be full of cats looking to be re-homed, please be responsible and do not add to these statistics. The CPL continues to offer a voucher scheme in support of cat neutering. Phone the surgery for more information.
Bladder stones in dogs are relatively uncommen. In the last month we have operated on two dogs to remove stones. One dog had about a dozen pebble sized stones in her bladder and more recently we removed a duck egg sized stone plus a few smaller ones from the bladder of a collie x. Bladder stones form when there is excessive mineralisation of the urine. there are several types of stones or uroliths, the most commen is struvite. There are many factors that precipitate bladder stone formation- one factor being changes to the PH of the urine. Male dogs are most at risk to obstruction of the urethra. Smaller stones can pass from the bladder into the urethra but get stuck where the urethra narrows as it passes through the penis thus preventing the dog from passing urine. sometimes it is necessary to perform an operation- an urethrotomy which by-passes the penis so the dog can urinate like a bitch. |
